Back to Basics Horse Training

Camelot Wilderness Ranch now offers basic gait training for all gaited breeds and horse despooking for the trail,  including basic ground manners. We have approximately 60 acres of Louisiana Wilderness with plenty of swamps perfect for despooking.  The amount of time your horse spends with us depends on how quickly your horse learns and responds.  Usually no less than 6 weeks but  sometimes longer.  You can be the judge as to when your horse is ready to graduate or you can trust our judgement. Every horse graduates with a Camelot Horse Academy Diploma for you to hang on your wall!  While your horse is in training, you are welcome to practice what he is learning in our arena and round pen when it doesn't conflict with our training schedules.  We can also teach your horse to park, kneel and neck rein for an additional fee.  We do NOT train for the show ring.  We focus on trail training. For gaited breeds, gait training is geared towards obtaining the smoothest gait your horse is capable of performing while trail riding, not the over animated gaits suitable for many, not all, show ring classes.  We do not teach speed and do not currently teach the canter.  Our goal is to help your horse become a calm, steady, trail partner by building a good foundation.  Our training philosophy centers around developing trust in humans with your horse while encouraging him to become the best he or she can be. We believe that moving along at each horse's individual pace is important and each horse learns at a different rate of speed.   We will be happy to email you a bi-monthly progress report at your request. We also show you how to continue the work with your horse for ultimate refinement and so that he doesn't resort back to old habits as well.  If you decide this is the type of training your horse needs, please contact us by email or telephone and complete the Training Enrollment Form by clicking on this link.  You must complete this form and it must accompany the arrival of your horse. You may print it out from the web. (337) 781-5548 or (337) 507-7267  Pricing is as follows:

This package does NOT include neck reining.  We believe that the young horse should learn to plow rein perfectly first and then be introduced to neck reining at a later date. Even if your horse is performing a few of these items already, if he is green broke and/or young, he goes here!  Start your young horse off on the right foot, literally!  Pasture boarding includes feed and hay twice daily.
